Another Great Halloween Event for the Whole Family

Celebrate a Very NOT Scary Halloween in Linden Square!
Bring the Whole Family to Linden Square for a Halloween Party and
Parade.

WHAT: Linden Square is proud to
host a
fun filled free event for all the little witches, goblins, and creatures.
The courtyard will be the backdrop for all the festivities including a
Halloween costume parade, story time with Big Joe the Storyteller,
freebies, prizes and fun for the whole family. All are welcome to

case of rain, the event will be held in front of Kenzie Kids and Magic

Halloween "Stuff to do" - A Great List from the Boston Globe

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Well, it is if you are me.  There are few things I enjoy more than spookifying my house, making costumes for the family, getting out to the Salem Halloween Parade and Salem Kids Day, researching designs for our pumpkins (yes, stay tuned for photos), and spending hours on Halloween craft projects with my 9 year old.  And then there's Trick or Treating in my childhood neighborhood which is about the picture of what Halloween Night should look like with neighbors decorating their houses, and dads scaring the little people with horrible gory masks, lots of hot cider to be had and a demand for candy at my mother's neighborhood preschool (Hartz Street Nursery in Gloucester) that tops the charts.  On average she passes out about 300 pieces!

GimmeLIVE Brings Berklee to Gloucester - This Thursday ya'll

We kick off the 2012/2013 Berklee in Gloucester season with The Jim Odgren Quintet live at The Gloucester House, playing jazz and standard songs in a style steeped in the rich tradition of 50's and 60's Blue Note jazz.

Both Professors at Berklee College of music in Boston, Dave Santoro (acoustic bass) and Jim Odgren (alto saxophone) co-lead the band. Joining them are three young and very talented Berklee student musicians - Roberto Giaquinto on drums, Davis Whitfield on piano and Lucian Gray on guitar. Their music swings hard, bringing out a style reminiscent of mainstream jazz from the era, combined with solos that venture into more modern sounds. Dave and Jim have released one cd together. It's called "Day Dreaming". It can be found on CDBaby here.

Jim Odgren, alto saxophonist extraordinaire, has put together an album filled with playing of extraordinary intricacy. Yet it's executed with such style and ease, it's accessible to the common listener. Its smooth melodicism, mixed with intricate lines and exiting harmonies makes this album a must to listen to. This is musicianship at the highest level and it deserves a place in everyones CD collection.

Chillin' With Some Brewers- Luke from Baxter at Phat Cats

Luke from Baxter Brewing has an awful lot on his plate.  Breaking ground on a new brewery, meeting a consistently sold out demand for his fine contribution to the beer world, selling his house in Lewiston to move closer to the Auburn, ME brewery and still making time to make it down for the monthly Beer Club meeting at Phat Cats in Amesbury, MA is no small feat. And no small commute.

 But I suppose that's a big part of what's brought the brewery so far - ambition.  Today's Boston Globe has a milestone update, marking just how ambitious Luke and his crew really are:


LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A Maine brewery is planning an expansion that will quadruple its capacity over time.
Baxter Brewing Co. said Monday its brewery in Lewiston will grow from 8,000 barrels to more than 33,000 barrels by the time the expansion is complete.
Company founder and president Luke Livingston says demand has exceeded supply since his small, craft-beer brewery began distributing its beers in early 2011.
Baxter says he’s also upgrading his canning line and searching for additional off-site warehouse space.
Livingston says the expansion will result in an additional 15 to 20 brewery jobs in the next 18 months, as well as construction jobs for the brewery expansion.
Between pouring samples and talking shop, enjoying some of the delicous dishes at this hip little spot, I got a chance to chat with Luke about what makes those cans of craft (they only ever use cans) so hot.

Well for one thing, the beer is good, really, really good.  The Stowaway IPA is my personal favorite, though the Hayride seasonal is a great choice for pairing up with sushi, IMHO, light but gingery, with a nice bite.  As a non-saki drinker, I'd be stoked to see this on a drink menu at my favorite sushi bar.  
The can preserves the beer.  Light is the biggest enemy of brew, altering the chemistry and causing that ugly "skunkiness" that we've all experienced, more so in lighter green bottle beers than darker vessels.  This is precisely the reason I ONLY drink Heineken when we make our pilgrimage to Saint Maarten.  It's brewed there, drank fast and cold, and escapes green bottled beer's ultimate plight.
But we are talking about Baxter and not Heineken, Amesbury and not Philibsburg.  There, I'll admit it, I;'m a Stream of Consciousness blogger (a lit geek's way of saying I have ADD while still comparing myself to Toni Morrison).
 Cans are also good for the planet.  Americans are 40% more likely to recycle cans than bottles.  And they are more portable, so traveling craft beer drinkers can stuff them in their Kelty backpacks with an ice pack and enjoy them once they've summitted. And it'll taste that much better for having earned it. 
Which brings me back to a conclusion I come to every time I meet with beer geeks or read beer news.  Craft brewing is a microcosm of the localvore foodie movement and a solid study of where the culture of eating and drinking is "going". The making of beer at the craft level, is a marriage of quality, integrity, community, taste, history and environment. From farm sourced ingredients to seasonal spices to the patience it requires to make it happen, to the growth of local jobs and the revenue that a new brewery brings into the (often) small towns that host them,  craft is a good thing for our country. And yummy, very yummy.

Mushroom Scoping at Ravenswood Park



 
What better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon than on a mild hike on the Magnolia Swamp Trail at Ravenswood.
Owned and maintained by The Trustees of Reservations, an amazing organization that owns and maintains over 100 natural and historical places in Massachusetts spanning over 25,000 acres a d hosting events and educational opportunities from live music to nature walks to antique car shows to races. In our area, Trustees also owns Castle Hill, Coolidge Park, and hosts the super cool concert series on the lawn at Cranes Castle. http://www.thetrustees.org/about-us/our-mission/

We support Trustees as "Hedge Fund Investors", a clever spin on their efforts to preserve green space and promote naturalist thinking across generations, and spend much of our weekend free time building fairy houses (see the international phenomenon on this UNH professor written children's series) and capturing the changing seasons in photos of this widely varied topographical marvel.


 Today's promenade focused on an "design in nature" viewing of fall mushrooms. The spectrum of colors in native New England fungi easily dispels any sense that our hues pale in comparison to the abundance of palate found in the vibrant Caribbean. See for yourself.
